What Is A12 Armor?

A12 armor is Alpine Armoring’s maximum protection level, equivalent to CEN BR7+ and NIJ RF3+. It stops the .50 BMG (12.7x99mm) round fired from a Barrett rifle, along with the armor-piercing rounds below it, and is the standard spec for governments, militaries, and heads of state facing the most extreme threats. Nothing on Alpine’s A-scale sits above it, and more importantly, most standards in the world do not include this round for a reason.

  • What A12 stops. A12 defeats the .50 BMG at 3,080 feet per second (940 m/s), the round fired by the Barrett anti-materiel rifle. It also stops the AP rounds rated below it, including the 7.62 NATO AP and .30-06 AP at A11. On the armor-level scale, A12 is as high as protection goes and beyond most industry standards.

  • What it adds to the vehicle. A12 bullet-resistant glass reaches 72+mm thick, and an A12 windshield weighs around 500 pounds, roughly 20 times that of a standard one. That mass requires reinforced door frames, upgraded hinges, special window motors, and heavily upgraded suspension and brakes to carry it.
  • Who specifies A12. It is the choice of government, military, and diplomatic fleets in the highest-risk postings, the clients who plan around .50-caliber fire rather than handguns or rifles. These builds usually ride on full-size armored SUVs and specialty platforms that can carry the weight.
